Sanitarium Back Down on Unfair Workers Compensation Policy

Sanitarium Management have now changed their position on the appalling practice of reducing workers' wages and profiting off injured workers after a sustained campaign by workers and their delegates which has stirred emotions at a site level and into the local community.

"We have demonstrated that we can change unfair treatment and work practices through our collective commitment and willingness to support each other at work" said site delegates Frank Scaturchio and Dave McClaren who were instumental in taking a stand in changing Sanitarium's position with respect to their workers compensation policy. Giving up some time on weekends has been worthwhile and we thank all those who have been helping outside of work hours.

This is the first step in a sustained campaign for Sanitarium to finally recognise workers want real change and putting in place fair company policies and procedures in dealing with workers' industrial and safety rights. These issues however will only be resolved when the company recognises workers' have a legitimate right to have their union present in representing us and having communication structures in place to deal with issues that are affecting workers.

The Union welcomes the decision and looks forward to having genuine discussions and negotiations with site Management if this is the direction new management are prepared to pursue. The real test though will come when the company has to make a public decision whether they will accept their workers' legitimate right to collectively bargain for an agreement. The majority are union members and 80% have signed a petition for a union agreement. The union has formally requested on numerous occasions since March 07 and Sanitarium is still yet to formally respond to their workers' wishes.

It's amazing what a company will do when you stand up and fight for what's fair and right.
